Catriona

Duncan House

I lay in Gordon’s arms the night before we leave for Edinburgh to plant the potion, but I don’t think either one of us sleeps. I had hoped to catch Mina alone upstairs at Duncan House while she was getting ready. But of course, she and Hamish are already in the kitchen when Gordon and I arrive.

One shared look between my sister and me seems to speak a thousand words, communicating all the love and emotion we feel for each other today. And that carries us through the breakfast that Hamish so lovingly prepares for us, the ride to the airport, and the solemn flight to Edinburgh.

Gordon rents the plain-looking van and, through the literal fog of morning as well as the foggy ambiguity of how our mission will play out, we arrive at our destination, or three blocks from it, I should say.

I don’t think I realize that I’m holding my breath until I hear Norval open the door and speak through the audio headphones I’m wearing. His tone is one of unwanted surprise and irritation, which can quickly become aggressive in Norval’s case. Mina’s greeting is polite but just as firm, and that’s when I exhale. Gordon nods at me and takes my hand as we wait for the rest of the conversation to unfold.

“Bold of you to just show up unannounced, don’t you think?”

“What I think,” says Mina with even more of an edge to her voice, “is that I have a right to see my sister whenever I want or need to. I’m here in Edinburgh, and I’d like to see her.”

Steady, Mina, I think, hoping she somehow hears me. Too anxious or forceful and he’ll just shut the door in your face.

“Wedding nonsense, I suppose,” Norval says. “No one else with you, then?”

There’s a slight pause and I hear what sounds like he’s taking a step outside the door, probably checking the immediate area to see if Gordon and I are hiding in the bushes.

“Yes, I have wedding errands today. But I’m alone. Contrary to what you might think, Catriona and I are not attached at the hip.”

“Good. Because wherever she is, Gordon is sure to follow. And I’m certainly in no mood for him today.”

I cannot believe the nerve of that man. I take a breath to say so, when Gordon puts a firm hand on my shoulder. I throw my hands up in the air in frustration, and he raises an eyebrow at me. He’s right. Saying anything out loud runs the risk of Norval hearing my voice, even though Mina’s earpiece is hidden, and it also may throw her off balance and make him suspicious. I sigh, which I’m certain she can hear, and try to hold it together.

“No need to let our moods get to us, whether they’re founded in anything concrete or not,” says Mina, and I know she’s talking to me as much as she is to Norval. Gordon gives my hand a squeeze of encouragement too.

“Come in then,” says Norval flatly.
